We’ve set the bar for

small dog daycare

in San Francisco since 2002

When you’re a small dog, size does matter.

Small dogs have special needs, and at Bark to Basics, it’s our job to see them catered to.

Here are the basics of how we do it:

Home-based daycare

We believe small dogs are much more comfortable in a home environment than a big warehouse. That’s why we run Bark to Basics in our home—literally.

Highly qualified staff

We believe top-notch care begins with a top-notch staff. That’s why we insist on a high staff-to-small-dog ratio with a staff who are dog*tec trained and certified.

Structured Fun

We believe good care is not a free-for-all. That’s why we maintain a daily routine of fun, rest, and love designed to send your dog home just the right amount of tired.

The end result? Great care for your small dog and peace of mind for you

Why Size Matters

The world is big when you’re a small dog. The rambunctious play of larger friends can easily lead to anxiety, accidental injury, and—of biggest concern—predatory drift.

Predatory drift, in which one dog suddenly mistakes another for prey and attacks, is largely misunderstood and unfortunately happens far more often than most small dog owners and caregivers are aware. Most drift incidents occur between dogs who are long-time friends or even housemates. Drift is not regular aggression and it can happen between any two dogs. But when there’s a large size difference, drift all too often results in serious injury and even death.

For all these reasons, at Bark to Basics, we invite only dogs 25 pounds and under to play.

Separation Anxiety Care Specialists

If your small dog suffers from a fear of being left alone, she’s not alone. And she never will be at Bark-to-Basics. We provide a specialized itinerary for our separation anxiety guests that keeps them safely with staff at all times.

“Such a Happy Pup!”

“Our puppy, a Puggle, loves Bark to Basics and we couldn't be happier with his care.  Shura and her team are such professionals.  We live nearby and on weekends our puppy runs to her house and waits hopefully for someone to come out and get him so he can play with his friends.  He gets lots of exercise and play time and is such a happy pup!”

A note from B2B owner Shura Kelly

“Hello! I’m so glad you found us. It’s been my incredible pleasure to serve the small dogs of San Francisco—and their wonderful owners—all these years. It’s an absolute joy to spend my day making small dogs happy, and I get just as much pleasure from knowing we make our clients’ days a little easier, too. My team and I would love to do the same for you and your dog!”
